I recently moved to Florida after graduating from college and was looking to play golf. I live in the Windermere/Orlando area where there are no shortages of courses. Now the only knock I have with Florida courses in general is that they are all pretty similar. There are not a lot of trees or character which sort of gives theses courses a bland feeling. However, Grand Cypress is a great a test of golf if you can afford it. Since I am a Florida resident I pay about 60 dollars a round. I've played every set of 9's at the resort (36). But the New Course is really quite a fun course, its not too long (6850) and is always kept in good condition.

That being said if you want do not want to pay the fees, there is another set of courses at the Orange County National Golf Center where the hold the Q school finals every year. Its two courses plus a short 9. It's the best set courses in all of Florida (in terms of price/challenge/service/condition).

Still Grand Cypress is a great for Florida golf but to be honest it isn't exactly Winged Foot or Quaker Ridge.

Well-manicured. Friendly staff. Highlight of day is that we may have seen a rare Florida panther lope across our path.

Relatively featureless. Expensive. Many times could not tell layout of hole and where to drive even with gps on carts. Probably need to play more than once or twice to appreciate design.

It seems the newest(and cheapest) rage in golf design is to clear cut everything, landscape some mounds and pot bunkers into the terrain, and call it a "links course". Unfortunately, it makes it hard to recall any particular hole since they all seem the same. At least this course, The New Course, has a few berms and a couple of memorable holes, but overall not worth the price of play.
