Shoots in the 70s

The Biltmore golf course wad designed by Donald Ross in 1926. Adjacent to the classic Biltmore Hotel, this daily fee course was run by the city of Coral Gables for many years. Fortunately, a few years ago, the city bid out the management and the course was taken over by the Hotel. The dinnerence is dramatic and Biltmore is onece again a great golf course. Playing at about 6800 yards, the course does require some length off the tee. However, landing areas are VERY generous, and the greeans for the most part are rather large. Biltmore is currently in greatshape, and the hotel is sinking a lot of money towards upkeep. Additionally, rather than the former city employees, the place is now run with friendly and knowlegeable golf people. The turnoarond atBiltmore has been dramatic.

Shoots in the 90s

Before my review, let me preface it by saying that I had high expectations for this course, which may have brougt down my ratings. The course itself is a very average, flat, Florida course. The holes are somewhat similar to one another and therefore leave the golfer bored after the front nine. However, my major complaint is the rough. It is made up entirely of crabgrass, and any errant shots into it are lucky to be found. On a positive note, the fariways and greens were in good condition, but barely drag my overall rating up to a 3. As far as service goes, there is none. On a blistering 97 degree Florida summer day, the water coolers from the 1st to 9th tees were EMPTY. It was so hot that when I looked over to my partner, I screamed because I thought his hair was on fire a la Michael Jackson circa 1984. It turns out my partner is just a redhead. After seeing no cart girl for a while, I was forced to call the pro shop and complain. The "I just work here, man"-esque answer I received was that the course was owned by the city and he had no control over refilling the coolers. When I found the ranger, he told me the same thing in an even unfriendlier tone. Overall, the $35 cart rate they charge (and that was with the student discount) is an insult. If you care to tempt fate and heat stroke, the $18 walking fee is priced correctly. This course is no better than Orangebrook located about 20 minutes north in Hollywood which is half the price. If you are in the area, find somewhere else to play.
