Requires all the shots (except up/down and sidehill lies). Frontside par 3s play even longer than their typical 200+ yard setups (esp. in common southerly or westerly winds). Even the shorter par 4s require placement and finesse. Hole #8 is a short-to-mid-length par 5 with a dogleg at 400 yards, which makes 2-shot, cut-the-corner approach essentially impossible. Hole #13, a double dogleg right, requires a 300-yard tree-clearing drive or a 3-shot approach with unerring left side placements before reaching the huge, but undulating green. Greens range from large to small, are flat or angled (sometimes steeply) or rolling, and are dependably true.

Backside par 3s. Ridiculous slope of #10 green and annoying street bisecting short (170 yards) #16 are simply Mickey Mouse. Hole #12 is a short (525 yards) par-5, but does require three straight shots.

Columbine Country Club (CCC) is a traditional, eastern or midwestern U. S. style course at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Located in the South Platte River bottom, CCC is rich with mature trees, thick-grassed fairways and rough (bluegrass) and dependably true greens (bentgrass). The course is generally flat, but it requires golfers to use almost all their skills--there are few up/down or sidehill lies--and all the clubs in their bags. In a state with multiple top-50 courses, the USGA has chosen CCC as its regional qualifying site for many years. The signature hole is number 4, a 426-yard (middle tees), par-4 tester requiring shots over water on both the drive and the approach. Both par-3 holes on the front side are generally 200+ yards. Even the shorter par-4 holes (e.g., 5, 6, 11, and 18) defy attempts to overpower them and require drive placement to avoid hazards and/or to position approach shots.

Pro shop is well-supplied with top-quality merchandise at pro shop prices. Staff is knowlewdgeable, helpful and polite. This is NOT a strong teaching staff, however.
