Shoots in the 70s

Of the courses I have played in America and the UK, this course offered the least value for the green fee paid. The fairways were horrible, I encountered several patches of gravel in the fairways. I don''t expect to get my clubheads to get scratched when playing a shot from the middle of the fairway. Some of the bunkers had standing water in them, I assume from the watering system, because it didn''t rain during my stay in California. The grooming of the fairways was pathetic, with pile of lawn clippings left sitting. This was the only course I played on my visit that I would never play again. I enjoyed my golf rounds at Poppy Ridge, Presidio, Half Moon Bay, Sandpiper and Cinnabar Hills. The only thing of any redeeming value at Monarch Bay was the driving range.

Shoots in the 80s

I have to say that this is the worst course I have played in the last 3 years. We payed 72 bucks a player. For that price I don''t expect Aviara, but I do expect certain simple things. I expect not to have to lose balls in the "light rough" due to bad grooming. Balls should visible from 10ft at least. I expect that there won''t be grass clippings all over the place. I expect that the majority of the fairways won''t be marred with hardpan, gravel and drainage marks. I expect that their won''t be standing water in bunkers when it hasn''t rained in a month. I expect that there will be water containers where there are water stands. I expect that the cart girl will start her rounds before 10am on a Sunday morning. Perhaps the saddest commentary is that all 6 employees I complained to knew about the problems. They all grumbled under their breath that management sucked, and they would never pay $72 bucks to play here.

If you want to play links golf, go to Bodega Bay or the courses on the 17 Mile Drive. For an $83 green fee, I expected the course to be in much better shape than it was. I consider this the most overpriced golf course in the San Francisco area.

Shoot in the 80s

This is an excellent course, for a wholly public venue. It is a true links course, with exposed fairways, high rough, marshes and lots of wind. It is set right on San Francico Bay and the feel of the ocean is prevalant throughout the course. It is not as difficult as other links style courses in California, but when the wind blows, it will test you. It is fun in that you have to take into account the effect of the wind on every shot. The greens are excellent, fast and true.

This course was completely made over from a very poorly laid out and conditioned muni course a few years ago. The new architect, John Harbottle, is one of my favorites. He also did Cinnabar Hills near here. He has a great imagination and did a great job here. The course is now called Monarch Bay, and also has a pitch and putt course adjacent to the main course.

I would honestly rate this course well above Half Moon Bay's Ocean course, which is more that twice the green fee. The previous reviewer complained of the price, but I think that is one of the best things about it. It is only 40 dollars to walk during the week.

For nonresidents of San Leandro, this course isn't worth the weedend green fee. For walking, the green fee is over $70 and the course is mediocre.

The course is in better shape after the renovation, but if you are going to spend $71 to walke or $83 to ride a cart, use that money at a course that has ambience like Wente Brothers, San Juan Oaks, Cinnabar Hills or the Monterey Peninsula courses like Black Horse, Bayonet and Poppy Hills.
