lived there a few years ago and could not take all the issues between the golf coarse and the home owners. the challenge used to be great but now it is taken over by houses and the feel is not the same. the old coarse was really great until the coarse was sold and now it has gone down hill. practice greens are in bad shape. also there is not a full time marshall to stop all the drunk foul mouth idiots from playing.

Monarch Dunes has matures remarkably over the past few years. The design and layout is spectacular. The conditions are pristine from tee box to green. Unless you hit into the dune grass (and you're not supposed to, of course), there isn't a bad lie available anywhere. Not too crazy about the greenside bunkers as they are a bit heavy and hard. This is a spectacular course that can treat your score nicely or slap you down hard. Either way, it's lots of fun.

Customer Service

Friendly, approachable staff.

A different golf experience than you have ever played. Not links, exactly, because there are a lot of trees and it is a bit inland, but not a parkland course either. I enjoyed my round, but it was overpriced

Played on 1/14/08 in nice weather. I found MD to be a very enjoyable course which was in good condition, with firm, true rolling greens. Although the tip sheet from the pro shop helped, there is enough tricky terrain to benefit from prior experience as to shot placement on a few holes. The course was very lightly populated on a winter Monday afternoon, almost all twosomes, moving along nicely. No problem finishing before sunset.

Customer Service

Excellent. Very friendly and accomodating. Senior twilight rate was a steal at $40. Lunch from the grill was delicious as well.

Played Monarch Dunes for first time today. Wonderful course. Super fast greens (very hard), thin fairways but what you would expect from new course. What you wouldn't expect is that almost every hole is so surrounded by houses that you feel like you are playing golf in a housing development rather than a links golf course. It is really too bad so if you can close your eyes (be the ball) then it is a fine golf course.

They really need a yardage book with accurate pictures of the holes as a number of shots are blind. On one hole I played the wrong fairway.

This is an absolutely gorgeous golf course and is not to be missed if you want to play a very reasonably priced central California coastal golf course. It was hard to believe that this course is only one year old. So keep this in mind when reading the other reviews that were written last year. The fairways were lush, the greens firm and fast, but fair, and the rough was thick, but not so much that balls could not be found or played. Being from Texas, the dunes were a new experience for me, as well as the elevation changes which made the course both challenging and beautiful. There are some homes around the course, but none that I noticed that would come into play for any but the very worst of shots. Nothing that I am aware of within 30 miles of San Luis Obispo can hold a candle to this course.

Customer Service

Great service and the clubhouse is now ready and very nice for a daily fee course.

Monach Dunes was a fine golfing experience. Booked our round through the Santa Maria Inn. Also, a fine experience. I suggest spending a night at the Santa Maria Inn. It's a winner.
The course is fresh and young. Some amazing views throughout the round. Also, I should mention the greens. Keeps you on your toes.
The club house was fairly priced and served up a sweet burger. The brews were cold and the smiles were warm. Also, I should mention we played a round with a member of the PGA. He was an amazing golfer. And very patient .
Looking forward to my next round.

Customer Service

Great.

I found this to be a refreshingly different golf course than any of the others in the region. Absolutly fun to play and worthy of a return visit. After walking off of the course I found that I could recall every hole. I can't say that about many other courses that I've played. The course was in terrific shape. The fairways were well developed and very enjoyable to play off of. The greens were firm and fast just like those that I have played in Scotland. Anyone who can't handle playing with some wind better not come here, or Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, Sandpiper, or almost any course in Scotland for that matter! Wind and golf have gone hand in hand since the advent of St. Andrews. Having said that, I must also say that there was no wind when I teed off and only a mild breeze on the back nine. The bunkering was interesting around the greens. While some bunkers fronted a portion of the green there was always a clear angle into at least half the green. Great variety among the five par threes. My favorite was the downhill number 11. Great view of the coastal dunes and ocean from the tee. The hole provides you a couple of options on how to attack with either a high approach or a low punch shot. The golf shop service was first rate and the clubhouse food was well above average. Even though they are working out of temporary clubhouse there was a casual comfort there without a lot of pretention that I found appealing. If you are passing through the area I would recommend that you play Monarch Dunes over any of the other course in the region.

This is supposed to be a links syle course, but the front of the greens are protected on 15 of 18 holes and landing the ball on the green with anything but a wedge will cause the ball to run off the back. Greens are smooth but hard as cement. DO NOT tee off if the wind is blowing. MD is far from being a fair test of your ability to stike the ball and more about lucky bounces. It is a beautiful layout that will have few repeat guests. This is a mickey mouse layout that will have to be changed to get golfers to return.
