I starting out, so I hit the par 3 course at Rancho. The fairways are narrow, the shortest is 80 yards, and the longest is about 135. The holes are pretty straightforward. A couple of holes have sand traps, but no water hazards. Good for beginners. There's usually no line, but it sometimes gets busy during the afternoons on the weekend. Expect to take about alittle over a hour to finish if you don't have anyone in front of you, and add another 30 minutes if there's a slow group in front of you.

Rancho is my favorite public course in LA. $28 to play. $40 to ride. New greens installed 5-6 years ago. They are in AWESOME shape these days. The course is in great shape in general. Has a bad rap for slow play. Well deserved. If you can't get an early tee time then walk on. Get there about 4:30am and you should get out pretty early. If you tee off before 7am, will play in 4hrs to 4.5hrs MAX. After 8am, who knows?

This is a classic course with gigantic mature trees. The course has a lot of character and NO "gimmick" holes. A lot of subtle doglegs and minor elevation changes. Definitely NOT a flat course.

The par 5's are the easiest holes. A couple very long par 4's and the par 3's range between 180 and 210 yards.

Bottom line....the only courses in LA that I would rather play are the super nice country clubs like LACC, Riviera, etc... A comparable course would be Brookside (the long one). None of the Long Beach courses are in the league of Rancho although they are decent.

Customer Service

Decent. The starters are much nicer than they used to be.

Model Reviewed: Rancho Park

The best L.A. City public course. Why? Probably because they used to hold the L.A. Open there, and it's just set up correctly. The only hazards are sand, trees, and length. Most of the fairways are wide open. Very slow on the weekends, but a great course anyway.

Customer Service

Excellent. Good guys, not jerks.

Chipping area is a joke and driving range is targeted for a complete makeover (it needs one because distances are not easy to distinguish). The most putting green space in the City, although rarely do they have all 3 open at the same time.

Quite possibly, the best course in the LA City system. Doglegs, elevation changes and in one of the best neighborhoods in LA City. Slow play, however. Count on 5.5 hours for a weekend round. Worth a try. Don't try and walk-on on a weekend or holiday unless you would like to wait about 1-2 hours for a spot. Play the course on a weekday and enjoy yourself. The starters are a typical government employees with little concern for customer service or courtesy.

It's the best public course in Los Angeles. It's located in West Los Angeles (8 miles from Santa monica) so the weather is nice all year around. It used to be in top shape but recently the greens and the fairways have not been in good shape. Fun course with many blind shots and two long Par 4 and Par 3 holes. You will never get bore playing this course. However, on weekedends prepare to spend about 6 hours due to slow play.

New greens were put in about a year ago now, and they are already completely thrashed. I played a twilight nine last week and fixed at least six ballmarks on every green, but had to leave dozens more so as not to hold up play. Apart from the horrible etiquette of your fellow "golfers" and the incredibly slow pace (figure minimum 6.5 hours for 18 with a mid-day weekend tee time), this is actually a fine and interesting course. Lots of elevation changes, a few long holes, mature trees lining every hole, and of course, the famous plaque at 18 tee commemorating Arnold Palmer's 12 on that hole. That's right: Arnie made a 12. You just might make eagle.

Starters are City government workers, with all that that implies

For a public course this is great! Since the other reviews some stuff has changed. The greens are settled in and the ground is not soft and squshy anymore. the still need some water hazards though. Be sure to bring a book 'cause you may be sittin' on your ass for a couple of hours.

Customer Service

Starters were kinda mean!

First time playing this course. Heard that it plays very slow, esp during the weekend. However, a friend who has the LA city reservation card got a tee time at 5:50 am on a Sunday. We finished in least than 4 hours. The entire course was in good shape. However, all the greens were
completely redone recently, as a result it was quite firm. It needs a little time to settle in and mature. You need to stay on the fairway to post a good score as there are OB and numerous treelines that require you to pitch out in order to have a shot to the green.

I've know for years that this is the busiest course in the US, but the other day I heard from a reliable source that no other course in the world plays as many people per 18 holes than Rancho Park. Sitting in the middle of west LA/Beverly Hills, you need a special card to make tee times and forget walking on unless you have a couple hours to spare. As far as the course condition, the greens were just redone and are quite nice actually, the tee boxes are a miss of divots and spongy grass. It's not bad for a public course, though. They need some water hazards.

Sometimes grouchy starters
