WeKoPa - Golf courses, Scottsdale,

DESCRIPTION

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is a spectacular 7,225-yard 18-hole golf course nestled within a dramatic, natural desert setting. The course is located within the boundaries of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, just 15 minutes east of Scottsdale, AZ. Open since December 14, 2001, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation’s stunning new golf course. Featuring an authentic tribute to the local Yavapai tribe, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club pays homage to the original dwellers of the land. Located in Fort McDowell, on the east edge of Scottsdale, WE-Ko-Pa (the Yavapai pronunciation for “Four Peaks Mountain”) presents a unique alternative to the already upscale Scottsdale golf market. Designed by noted golf course architect Scott Miller, the golf course was created to play a challenging 7,225 yards from the back tees, but with multiple tee boxes that are well-spaced to cater to players of all calibers. In addition, there are no-nor will there ever be – residences on the golf course, yielding some of the most dramatic and “natural” views of the surrounding mountain ranges including the Four Peaks, McDowell Mountains, Red Mountains and the Superstitions. Another distinguishing factor of the golf course is the ample amount of natural mesquite, palo verde, saguaros, shrubbery and desert vegetation that sprawl through the arroyos and canyons of We-Ko-Pa, creating a lush desert feel

I've played both the Cholla and Saguaro course multiple times. The WeKoPass was a great deal as an aside and you can save money with the one critique being the word is out and it's hard to get a tee time in high season. Saguaro course is walkable and the views are spectacular with no houses and plenty of elevation changes making walking it not for the uninitiated but tee to green is close. The Cholla course was a mystery to me at first until I started figuring out what landmarks they put in to tell you where to hit it and where not to. I like Saguaro a bit better-both are top notch courses and very competitive in terms of price for the quality. I'd rate this ahead of Grayhawk with fewer surprise 4.5-5.0 hour rounds.

Cart service has been good and the rangers will act if need be.

I'd heard such good things about this course, but was disappointed. The routing is decent, but certainly not exciting or unique by any means. It reminded me a lot of many US resort courses- wide open fairways, not a lot of challenge or intrigue.
The management's overuse of water is profligate and excessive. The fairways are heavily soaked, even in the deepest droughts. The par 3's have 80-100 yards of extra grass behind the greens. IMHO it's stupid and obnoxious to take such advantage of the tribe's unlimited water rights. The prices for non-residents and residents are low.

Decent.

Played Cholla the original of the two course. Great course visually and in immaculate condition. Keeping the course that beautiful, comes at the price of having to walk to your ball with 5 clubs in your hand as the course is cart path only. Min 5 hr rounds.

If you miss the fairway here, you are punished severely. The greens are in excellent shape and quite fast, but a little firm. Course is a lot tougher than its rating.

Practice facility is very good.

Customer Service

Staff is excellent. 10 out of 10.

Played Cholla: outstanding layout, great scenery, no houses. Tough course, especially the first time around. Lots of decisions to make, would probably be a lot easier after a couple rounds. Conditions were immaculate.

Course is in excellent condition and is challenging. Scenery is fantastic as it is on an Indian reservation and you don't feel like they are trying to sell you a house which is common on most new non muni courses in Arizona, where you are playing in somebody's back yard.

Good: 1. This is the ultimate desert course. There are no houses to impede the spectacular views of the surrounding desert and mountain ranges. From the elevated tees, the views are just breath taking. I've played in Scottsdale and in Palm Springs and this is the only course that has really fulfilled my imagination of a true desert course. 2. The condition of the course is as good as any other top course in the area - perfect. 3. The course plays easier than Troon and Grayhawk, but it still poses a decent challenge. However, if you can carry your driver over 260 yards, you should play from the tips. 4. At $150 this course is a steal compared to Grayhawk and Troon. 4. The views are great, but would have been better without the houses. Bad: NONE
